I’ll give you something to lighten the mood, perhaps. This little lady here. I’m not really a gun advocate or an anti gun advocate, but damn this woman has instinct. I’m glad the good guy won.

Obviously, if it had not been a gun free zone, this wouldn’t have happened.

no wait

that would have changed jack shit.

Both sides politicize tragedies like this equally. It’s not necessarily a bad thing, as the reason that people politicize these events is in the hopes of preventing future similar events from happening, or at the very least minimizing the death toll, through policy.

That being said, it won’t work anyway. More gun control, less gun control, people will still kill each other because they are raised to fear and hate what’s different. If a gun’s not available, they’ll use a car, truck, pressure cooker bomb, chlorine gas, even machetes and other garden tools (see Rwandan genocide).

The most peaceful nations on the planet are peaceful because they have a homogeneous culture. Fear and hatred are virtually nonexistent when everyone looks and acts similar.

That’s not true at all...

For example, Japan has one of the most homogeneous cultures in the world, yet abuse and mistreatment of the few minorities and other cultural outliers they do have is rampant. And that’s today. Landing in China and Korea in the early 20th century didn’t suddenly plant the idea for rape and genocide into their heads.

Nope. Japanese right wing nutjobs don’t like Koreans and Chinese, but that’s pretty much it. They are a minority among Japanese also and most just don’t give a shit. As far as other minorities go (white, black, Brazilians...etc), it’s a lot better than in most other countries.

A shit load of stuff is different for foreigners here, sometimes really annoying and so on, but abusive or violent like in the States? Certainly not.

Places are peaceful when everyone is financially comfortable and well fed. It has nothing to do with living in a homogenous culture or whatever sort of half baked neo nazi theory you just proposed. Most of the shootings in the US are a result of crime, and are committed within the same “culture”. The ones that grab headlines are usually the result of mental illness.

Denying natural born citizenship based on ancestry isn’t violent, but it’s certainly marginalizing.

Also, racism is largely in the realm of the right wing here, but that doesn’t make it ok.

The main problem with Japan and descendant of Koreans born in Japan comes from this “son of Yamato” thing. It’s the same reason why Japanese are shocked that miss Japan is a “hafu” and part of why Japan is constantly praised for their “skill” at mixing modernism and traditions.

They indeed do mix modernism and tradition very well, but that also imply laws and way of seing things that don’t really have their lace in the 21st century. That still does not make the racism anywhere near on par with what can be going on in the States... Not even talking about the physical violence, which is statistically nonexistent in Japan.

That lack of violence has NOTHING to do with its ethnic and cultural homogeneousness.

Well, if the racism was as bad as you think it is, trust me, the violence would also happen here.

I can see the CNN headline now

BREAKING: TheHondaBro dead in a shooting. Political opponents celebrating in the streets. ForSweden, noted opponent in the recent OPPO presidential election, was quoted as saying “this is great, maybe fewer gun control laws aren’t such a bad idea!” This is a developing story.

I forgot to mention that citizenship is not denied based on ancestry in Japan. I thought you were talking about the Japanese-Korean problem, but rereading you, it doesn’t seem to be the case. Kat is currently in the process of becoming Japanese and so can I if I want. You cannot get dual citizenship though, so in order to become Japanese, you need to give up your nationality.

I won’t be doing that. I can still live here forever if I want though.

This is the 2nd Google result. If there’s no racism problem in Japan, then why is the Diet passing laws to resolve them?

It’s always extremely insensitive to use a tragedy to push an agenda in either direction.

With that said, I don’t think that the mall actually has the ability to be a gun free zone. I can’t speak for WA, but here the only thing a facility like a mall could do would be to ask you leave if you had a gun, and if you didn’t call the cops and you’d then be trespassing. It wouldn’t be a weapons criminal charge.

Kinja'd!!! wiffleballtony > Berang

Kinja'd!!!0

It’s feasible that the outcome could have been better or worse. Depending on the skill and discretion of the potential other actor.

With that said even if it wasn’t a so called gun free zone there’s absolutely no guarantee anyone would be carrying. I live in a state with a very high gun ownership rate and there is no permit required to conceal a gun. But very few people do it anyway because carrying a gun is a hassle.

If somebody is out to shoot somebody they’re not going to be deterred by the possibility that somebody else might have a gun. If somebody is actually considering a “gun free zone” in their plan to shoot somebody, they’re probably smart enough to realize that if they’re going to take a gun there, somebody else could, or they’re mad enough not to care in the first place.

I specifically talked about the Korean nationalization issue. They can and do get nationalized. The article you linked to explains that 7000 a year do. The problem is that they need to drop their Korean citizenship and some don’t want to. And where did I say there was no racism in Japan?? I already had long talks around that with Kat in the past on here and yes, there is racism. I won’t be able to buy land for exemple, because I’m not japanese. Some people will have no problem saying in their ad that they won’t rent appartments to foreginers. Children of Korean immigrants, who don’t even speak Korean at all who are still considered “foreigners” and can’t get nationalized ...

But 50% of the country willing to kick brown people out level of racism? Sikh getting killed because “surely muslim!” racism? Segregation of black people in black ghettos, being put in black schools all that be shot by white cops type of racism?? Nope. Certainly not.
